Isothermal compression of an eclogite from the Western Gneiss Region (Norway)

چکیده

In the Western Gneiss Region in Norway, mafic eclogites form lenses within granitoid orthogneiss and contain best record of pressure temperature evolution this ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) terrane. Their exhumation from UHP conditions has been extensively studied, but their prograde rarely quantified although it represents a key constraint for tectonic history area. This study focused on well-preserved phengite-bearing eclogite sample Nordfjord region. The was investigated using phase-equilibrium modelling, trace-element analyses garnet, trace- major-element thermobarometry quartz-in-garnet barometry by Raman spectroscopy. Inclusions garnet core point to crystallization amphibolite facies at 510–600°C 11–16 kbar, whereas chemical zoning suggests growth during isothermal compression up peak 28 kbar 600°C, followed near-isobaric heating 660–680°C. Near-isothermal decompression 10–14 is recorded fine-grained clinopyroxene–amphibole–plagioclase symplectites. absence increase seems incompatible with classic view along geothermal gradient subduction zone may question significance metamorphism. Two end-member scenarios are proposed explain such an compression: Either (1) rocks were originally depth lower crust consecutively buried portion subducting slab or (2) 14 overpressure constant collisional stage orogeny.

Diffusion versus recrystallization processes in Rb–Sr geochronology: Isotopic relics in eclogite facies rocks, Western Gneiss Region, Norway

Rb–Sr and U–Pb isotopic data for granulite facies rocks, forming textural relics with respect to eclogite facies metamorphism in the Western Gneiss Region (WGR) of Norway, highlight the importance of textures and mineral reaction kinetics for the interpretation of geochronological data. Studied rocks from Bårdsholmen, southern WGR, were subjected to granulite facies metamorphism at 955 ± 3 Ma (...

Exhumation of high-pressure rocks beneath the Solund Basin, Western Gneiss Region of Norway

The Solund–Hyllestad–Lavik area affords an excellent opportunity to understand the ultrahigh-pressure Scandian orogeny because it contains a near-complete record of ophiolite emplacement, high-pressure metamorphism and large-scale extension. In this area, the Upper Allochthon was intruded by the c. 434 Ma Sogneskollen granodiorite and thrust eastward over the Middle ⁄ Lower Allochthon, probably...

High-temperature deformation during continental-margin subduction & exhumation: The ultrahigh-pressure Western Gneiss Region of Norway

A new dataset for the high-pressure to ultrahigh-pressure Western Gneiss Region allows the definition of distinct structural and petrological domains.Much of the study area is an E-dippinghomoclinewith E-plunging lineations that exposes progressively deeper, more strongly deformed, more eclogite-rich structural levels westward. Although eclogites crop out across the WGR, Scandian deformation is...

Discrete ultrahigh-pressure domains in the Western Gneiss Region, Norway: implications for formation and exhumation

New eclogite localities and new Ar/Ar ages within the Western Gneiss Region of Norway define three discrete ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) domains that are separated by distinctly lower pressure, eclogite facies rocks. The sizes of the UHP domains range from c. 2500 to 100 km; if the UHP culminations are part of a continuous sheet at depth, the Western Gneiss Region UHP terrane has minimum dimensions...

The fate of subducted continental margins: Two-stage exhumation of the high-pressure to ultrahigh-pressure Western Gneiss Region, Norway

Thermobarometry suggests that ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) to high-pressure (HP) rocks across the Western Gneiss Region ponded at the Moho following as much as 100 km of exhumation through the mantle and before exhumation to the upper crust. Eclogite across the c. 22 000 km study area records minimum pressures of c. 8–18 kbar and temperatures of c. 650–780 C. One orthopyroxene eclogite yields an UH...
